Tracking Local Sea Ice Extent in the Beaufort Sea Using Distributed Acoustic Sensing and Machine Learning

چکیده

Abstract Monitoring sea ice extent is critical to understand long-term trends in climate change. Here, we show that ambient noise recorded by fiber-optic sensing technology deployed an Arctic shallow marine seafloor environment can track extent. We use a 37.4 km long section of cable offshore Oliktok Point, Alaska. Data are analyzed for two weeks: one July 2021 and another November 2021, when there incomplete evolving coverage. apply different Machine Learning algorithms identify types seismic frequency–time scalogram images. find evidence dominant related excitation oceanic gravity waves open water the presence with sufficient strength suppress wave action. Comparison Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) clustering results satellite-based observations indicates DAS complement constraints from satellite imagery locally increasing spatial temporal resolution tracking which coverage diminish ocean waves.

Investigating Arctic Sea Ice Survivability in the Beaufort Sea

Arctic sea ice extent has continued to decline in recent years, and the fractional coverage of multi-year sea ice has decreased significantly during this period. The Beaufort Sea region has been the site of much of the loss of multi-year sea ice, and it continues to play a large role in the extinction of ice during the melt season. We present an analysis of the influence of satellite-derived ic...

Arctic Sea Ice Extent Prediction

Climate change is a pressing and present issue which has come to be at the forefront in the last few decades. As such, understanding climate change is of utmost importance. In addition to environmental impact, these changes will have social and economic ramifications as these changes will affect the way in which we utilize land and sea resources in the future. The minimum annual arctic sea ice ...

Survival and breeding of polar bears in the southern Beaufort Sea in relation to sea ice.

1. Observed and predicted declines in Arctic sea ice have raised concerns about marine mammals. In May 2008, the US Fish and Wildlife Service listed polar bears (Ursus maritimus) - one of the most ice-dependent marine mammals - as threatened under the US Endangered Species Act. 2. We evaluated the effects of sea ice conditions on vital rates (survival and breeding probabilities) for polar bears...

Variability and trends in sea ice extent and ice production in the Ross Sea

[1] Salt release during sea ice formation in the Ross Sea coastal regions is regarded as a primary forcing for the regional generation of Antarctic Bottom Water. Passive microwave data from November 1978 through 2008 are used to examine the detailed seasonal and interannual characteristics of the sea ice cover of the Ross Sea and the adjacent Bellingshausen and Amundsen seas. For this period th...

Bowhead whale body condition and links to summer sea ice and upwelling in the Beaufort Sea

We examined the response of bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus) body condition to summer sea ice conditions and upwelling-favorable winds. We used a long-term dataset collected from whales of the Bering–Chukchi–Beaufort Seas (BCB) stock to estimate various body condition indices (BCI’s) for individual whales that were harvested by Alaskan Eskimos. A series of offshore regions frequented by bowhe...
